"Sometimes his soul is weary, midnights can be rough. With little rest he
does his best, decisions too, are tough. Other days are funny, some are sad it's true. His life's about just helping out, the likes of me and you..." (Excerpt
from My Hero by Cheryl Reimann)
There is no "just doing a job" in law enforcement or emergency response, it is always above and beyond the call, there is no middle ground. 100% dedication is demanded from every single man or woman who dons a uniform, and puts on their badge. They are heroes in their every day life, but when they put on their uniform they become superheroes, and superheroes leave no one behind, and they always do their best... but even superheroes can sometimes get it wrong!
Attending to an accident scene on one of our major freeways, Officer John, as the first officer on scene attended to what appeared to be a injured male lying on the side of the road with a severely broken leg.
The leg was in a completely unnatural state, and lying in such a direction that the officer could only but assume that this was a particularly severe injury.
At this time all traffic officers were in possession of a Basic Ambulance Course qualification to enable them to attend to injured parties and assist by administering basic emergency, and often life saving, first aid.
Officer John attended to the unconscious injured man with painstaking diligence, by setting his severely injured leg in to a splint, whilst awaiting the arrival of the paramedics and ambulance.
on arrival, the paramedic wanted to examine the extent of the injuries more closely to determine their course of action in treating the patient. He proceeded to cut away at the still unconscious man's long pants.......only to find that the severely injured and buckled human leg was in fact a severely splintered and battered wooden prosthetic!
Sufficed to say, the stress and tension of the accident scene was momentarily broken with laughter, and jest. But not one person could say that officer john did not do his best, or go above and beyond the call of duty!
Unfortunately the wooden leg could not be saved...but to this day, this story is still remembered with a smile, and respect for the utmost dedication to the assistance of a fellow human being by a law enforcement officer!
"He risks his life for strangers, always does his part. A modern day crusader, my hero has a heart." (excerpt from My Hero, Cheryl Reimann)
